Community members join LAB for a variety of reasons, and with varying levels of experience with abolition or decolonization. We encourage you to reflect on your ‘why’ and keep it mind as you engage with the community. There are no wrong answers here! Doing this prepares you for a better experience at LAB, and encourages just and meaningful connections with other community members.

The work of care for community, decolonizing, and divesting from capitalism can be challenging. While we do have protocols in place for situations that require more support, members must have accountability for their individual relationships within LAB.

What is your capacity for or experience with communicating boundaries and navigating difficult conversations?*

LAB is a collective of professionals working to decolonize the animal care and behavior fields for the betterment of humans and non-human animals alike. In this Discord, we provide educational content, peer support, resources, and fundraising efforts for those in need and projects we believe in. Volunteers also do work on the ground in their communities such as stocking community pantries for animal companions and humans, visiting and providing supplies to homeless encampments, transporting animals for veterinary care, organizing for tenants’ rights, and so much more. As you can imagine, this work costs a lot of time and money, and as working poor folks ourselves, we have to balance helping others with keeping our own lights on at home.

How much would you be able to contribute to LAB per month to at least keep the Discord running, viable, and valuable to its community members? Please know that there is NO SHAME in choosing the $0 option. We’ve all been there, and pretty much all of us go through cycles of being able to contribute for some time, and then not being able to for some time.
